“I was doing a landscape and I wanted to make a field with a bird flying over it. I had put a whole heap of reference marks on the canvas, then suddenly the forms that you see on the canvas began to appear; they imposed themselves on me. It wasn’t what I set out to do” (Francis Bacon, In conversation with Michel Archimbaud, pp. 80-81).

This painting, which is part of the Museum of Modern Art collection, New York, is the first Bacon painting ever bought by a museum. Bacon produced a second version of this work in 1971.
