Valerie Beston’s diary, 16 May 1979, notes: ‘Sphink looks like Muriel’. Muriel Belcher, proprietor of the Colony Room, Soho, and Bacon’s close friend since 1984, died on 31 October 1979. She had fallen ill while the painting was in progress, and Bacon had temporarily forsaken his trepidation towards hospitals in order to visit her.
